Trading Standards initiative keeps local business out of hot water and their customers in it
Smalley Hot Tub Services was among the first in the county to gain the national Buy with Confidence accreditation – and now they’re encouraging other businesses to get on board.
The scheme promotes legal, honest and fair trading, backed by Trading Standards across Greater Lincolnshire.
To receive Buy with Confidence accreditation, businesses go through a strict procedure which checks their trading history, financial background and criminal records. This sets businesses apart from their competitors and gives customers an extra level of reassurance.
Each approved trader is added to an online Buy with Confidence customer directory with a public profile using the Trading Standards approved logo.
They also get ongoing advice from Trading Standards to help them stay compliant with any new or changing legislation. Pinchbeck-based Smalley Hot Tub Services sells, repairs, services and installs hot tubs and swim spas, as well as supplys luxury garden buildings.
Justine and husband Chris set up the business in 2020 in Hampshire and had begun the accreditation process before moving to Lincolnshire two years ago and opening their first showroom in 2024.
“It’s always been really important for us to do things right by our customers and make sure we’re the best we can be,” Justine explained. “We pride ourselves on being a genuine caring family business, and having the Buy with Confidence accreditation lets our customers know that we have everything in place to provide a great service.
“It’s been a brilliant process, which ensures that we’re up to speed with legislation. We’ve also got a great relationship with Lincolnshire Trading Standards who are on hand to give us advice whenever we need it.”
The initiative was launched nationally in 2008 and is the largest scheme of its kind, supported by 67 local authority Trading Standards. It’s open to businesses operating in most sectors including the building and motor trades. So, next time you are looking to buy from a business, make sure you check the Buy With Confidence directory.
Any businesses that aren’t part of the scheme are being encouraged to get involved. Lincolnshire Trading Standards is offering an introductory 50% discount on fees for new members until April 2025.
