Works to improve the A16/B1180 roundabout in Spalding are set to end by late March.
Cllr Richard Davies, executive member for highways, said: "After ten months on-site, I’m glad to say we’re now just under a month away from finishing our improvements to Pinchbeck Roundabout.
"That means we’re expecting to have the roundabout fully re-open within the next four weeks, subject to weather, but with additional lanes in the roundabout itself and longer approaches and exits on the northbound A16 leg. It also means less congestion and better journey times, along with more capacity on the A16 for lorries and delivery vehicles.
“This has been a massive project that’s grown beyond simply improving Pinchbeck Roundabout. By the end of the scheme, we’ll have not only rebuilt three quarters of a mile of the A16 just south of the Pinchbeck Roundabout, but we’re also replacing the joints of the bridge over Vernatt’s Drain and are fully unblocking the drainage system between Springfield Roundabout and Pinchbeck Roundabout.
“As always, we try to carry out as much work as possible while at a particular site to avoid further disruption down the line – and this project is a perfect example of that.”
Other works that will be completed as part of the project after the roundabout is complete include:
- Constructing a new 240-metre link along Coronation Bank, from Holbeach Road to the Springfield Outlet car park
- Installing infrastructure at Springfield Roundabout to prevent verge damage from lorries
When finished, the Pinchbeck Roundabout project will have seen:
- Over 36,000 hours spent working on the works
- 25,000 tonnes of road building and fill material used
- ¾ of a mile of new kerbing laid
- Nearly 1 ¼ miles of new drainage installed
- Just under 2 miles of new underground street lighting ducts laid
The project is being funded by a portion of the £20m in ‘Levelling Up’ funding awarded to the county council in October 2021. The remaining funding is being used across four other projects, including improvements to Spalding’s A16/A151 Springfield Roundabout, the A16 Marsh Lane Roundabout, and footway/cycleway improvements in Boston and Spalding.
