Historic Landscape Characterisation (HLC) was a project that investigated how our landscape has been shaped by both natural and human activities over time.
It was supported by Historic England, the Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Service and all councils across Greater Lincolnshire.
The project divided Lincolnshire into several defined character areas and zones. These were used to illustrate the historical development of the Lincolnshire landscape.
The HLC can be used to inform:
- changes in land use and management.
- planning, conservation, and historic environment services
For details about the project and broad character areas, read The Historic Character of Lincolnshire.
For information about the character zones within each area, read The Historic Landscape Character Zones.
HLC digital mapping files are available for use within digital mapping programs.
